Defying genre classification, the independent and committed singer-songwriter duo ANTIDOTE has taken contemporary folk and spiced it up with character and flavourful global rhythms. Performing original material from their two latest albums, Cyclic Lament and Together, an unconventional and intriguing musical tapestry is woven by the use of traditional instruments played in daring ways. Tender vocals and bold, vigorous strings by Pauline Tidbury are complemented by a masterful and exotic accompaniment from Daniel St-Jean on diverse instruments (dulcimer, dulcitar, guitar) and vocals. Influenced by the ever-changing, ever-circling dark and light around her, Shelley O’Brien is a melancholy poet with an unshakably happy streak. A bit of a vagabond, she has spent months sailing seas, years living in the Far-East and days travelling on trains through Eastern and Western Europe. She has played in such places as Dawson City, Toronto, Japan, Umbria, and the Gulf of Mexico. In June 2008, she completed her new album You, Me and the Birds with Vancouver indie producer Matthew Rogers. She uses her toy-box collection of ukulele, casio, melodica and piano to accompany her rained-upon old-style voice. Visit her at: www.myspace.com/shelleyobrien.
Grampa Bob is the legendary “story-tailor” from the Eastern townships whom we love to invite to the Side Door at regular intervals. We never know what he will have in store for us, but he is always interesting and highly entertaining, and never fails to delight our audience!
From Uncle Dave Macon, to Pete Seeger, to John Hartford, each generation seems to have a performer who entertains and wows audiences with banjo in hand. To continue this passing of the 5-string torch, Montreal's own Terry Joe Rodriguez has emerged on the scene, frailing his long-neck Gibson banjo. An all-around entertainer who also accompanies himself with harmonica and even tap-dancing feet, he has a natural on-stage charm and exciting melodic clawhammer style that will take you on an unforgettable musical journey. His first, critically acclaimed album, Mountain Calling, was released in 2005, and he has another CD in the works. For more information: www.terryjoebanjo.com
